Description

The Minister for Agriculture, Irrigation, Natural Resources and Livestock , Hon. Suleiman Masoud Makame , has said the Ministry is determined to improve access to the milk market in the country to increase productivity in the modern and commercial dairy farming sector. Speaking at the distribution of 36 cows to herders in the Northern Unguja Region, Northern District B, Mangapwani Shehia , Hon. Suleiman said the move aims to increase production and raise the income of the people while collaborating with various stakeholders to continue supporting the efforts of herders to enhance milk production. He said the Government's goal is to make major reforms in the agriculture and livestock sector by encouraging modern agriculture instead of developing traditional agriculture and livestock farming where these reforms are expected to change the lives of the community, increase income and increase milk production as well as the availability of quality livestock. In addition, the Minister has promised to address all the challenges that will face herders and ensure they have a reliable market to sell milk as well as develop professional advice on best farming methods. For his part, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry, Dr. Salum Soud Hamed, has urged livestock farmers who have received loans to be vigilant in repaying their loans on time so that within five years Zanzibar can overcome the problems of low milk production. He said that the presence of the milk market is due to the high demand of consumers of dairy products as well as the opportunity for tourism in the country, so production should be increased to increase income. In parallel, Salum has stressed that livestock farmers maintain cooperation between themselves and other livestock farmers' groups so that they can develop the project and be able to solve problems by learning from their peers as well as encouraging feed and medical experts to be close to livestock farmers so that livestock receive the best and most reliable services. And the Director of the Department of Livestock, Asha Zahran Mohamed, said that the Department will continue the plan of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar to increase the production of livestock products, especially milk, to improve nutrition, increase household income and stimulate economic growth in the country. He added that the handover is based on the Government's plan to produce milk through high-quality, nutritious and climate-tolerant seeds in the country, which will be produced using modern methods. Speaking, a representative from the Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB), Abayo Ntakisigaye, said that within two years, the bank has already provided 248 cows to Unguja and Pemba, explaining that the distribution is a result of good loan repayments.from the herders. And the herders who were given the cattle have thanked the Ministry of Agriculture through the project for providing them with a loan that will help them in providing employment and being able to make a living. They have therefore promised to take care of their cattle with integrity, develop livestock farming as well as repay the loans on time so that others can also benefit.
