LIVESTOCK
Livestock rearing is one of the main agricultural activities in Zanzibar that is contributing towards the Zanzibar Development Plan (ZADEP 2021-2026) and the objective of the Zanzibar Development Vision 2050. In the year 2021, the livestock sub-sector contributed 12.9 percent to the National Gross Domestic Product (The Economic Survey 2021).
Furthermore, the livestock sub-sector plays a significant role in the economy of agricultural households in Zanzibar as it provides best source of animal protein, food security, a source of cash income, manure for the crop and veritable production, draught animal power for cultivation, and other socio – economic functions. The main types of livestock raised in Zanzibar are cattle, goats, chicken, other birds including ducks, turkeys and guinea fowls; and other livestock (rabbits and guinea pigs). Livestock products produced include meat, milk, eggs, hides and skins. Indigenous cattle (zebu), goats, and chickens are the most commonly raised livestock in Zanzibar.
